During Terms 2 and 3, all students (boys and girls) in Years 6 to 12 are required to wear ties with their Academic uniform, with the exception of the girls’ dress.
Whenever a student (boy or girl) wears the Formal uniform, they must also wear the School tie.

In Terms 2 and 3, students in Years 6 to 12 must wear their Formal uniform every Wednesday.
Winter Dress
Students in Years 3 – 12 are not permitted to wear the sports jacket with the Academic or Formal uniforms. Only RGS knitwear or the School blazer are to be worn with the Academic and Formal uniforms.
Female students in Years 3 - 12 are permitted to wear plain black tights with their Academic or Formal uniform. Black tights are to cover the student’s feet and are not to be worn with socks.
For added warmth, female students in Prep to Year 2 are permitted to wear plain black footless leggings with socks beneath the K–2 polo dress.
Change to Uniform and Grooming Standards
Please note a minor update to the School’s Uniform and Grooming Standards following feedback from students. Female students are now permitted to wear white ribbon, in addition to red and black ribbons, in their hair.
A reminder that when wearing the Formal Uniform, both male and female students are required to keep their shirts tucked in at all times.
Please refer to the Uniform and Grooming Standards for more information.
At The Rockhampton Grammar School we consider the health, safety and wellbeing of all children and young people to be the School’s highest priority. We strive to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and young people, in particular, through the Safeguarding Children and Young People Policies.

Here is important information regarding The Rockhampton Grammar School's Mobile Phone Policy.
During the School day
The School, and as of January 2024 supported by the Queensland Education Department states that the use of any smart device (mobile phones and smart watches) is not permitted during the school day from 8.30 am until 3.10 pm for all students or for students who have an early or late period 7.50 am until 3.50 pm.
In the Primary School
Primary students in Prep to Year 6 are not permitted to have mobile phones or devices during the school day. Primary Reception is available for all parents/carers who need to have a message given to their child during school time. If a mobile device is sent to school with your child, it must be signed in at Primary Reception on arrival to school and signed out in the afternoon. The security of the device is the responsibility of your child when in their possession. Non observance or breaches of the policy will result in parents being contacted and the device sent home with the understanding that it will not return to school. Devices are not permitted on school camps or excursions.
In the Secondary School
All students in the Secondary School are now required to turn these items off and place them in their locked locker on arrival at school. Items may be turned on again as the students depart at the end of the school day. The device should be stored securely in a student’s locker if they are a day student in the Secondary School, in a student’s locked cupboard if they are a boarder. In addition, boarding students are not to use any smart device outside the dormitories between the hours of 7.50 am and 3.50 pm.
Breaches of this Policy in the Secondary School
Non-observance or breaches of the rules will result in the mobile phone/device being confiscated and the following process followed.

At Monday’s Primary Assembly, we had the privilege of formally acknowledging our Year 6 student leaders as they received their leadership badges and titles for 2026.
It was a significant moment for our school community, recognising not only the roles these students now hold, but also the responsibility, service and character that leadership requires.
In speaking with students, we reflected on the idea that leadership often begins in small moments — encouraging another person, stepping forward when something needs doing, showing kindness, or choosing courage when it would be easier to remain on the sidelines. We reminded our students that strong leadership is rarely found in the loudest voice, but more often in those who act with integrity, empathy and a genuine willingness to support others. We congratulate all students who received badges and leadership titles and look forward to seeing the many ways they will contribute to Primary life this year.
As we move toward the end of term, I would also like to acknowledge our staff for the care, professionalism and energy they continue to bring each day. A strong term is built through the consistent work of people who quietly give so much for children and for one another.
Recent Parent-Teacher Interviews have also provided an important opportunity to strengthen the partnership between home and school. These conversations are valuable in building shared understanding around each child’s progress, growth and wellbeing, and we thank families for the time and care they bring to these discussions.
We also look forward to finishing the term strongly next Thursday with our Primary Cross Country — always a wonderful occasion for house spirit across the school.
Thank you for your continued partnership throughout the term. I wish all families a safe, restful and happy Easter break, with time for rest, connection and renewal ahead of Term 2.

Updates from the Deputy Head of Primary (Operations & Students)
As part of our ongoing commitment to student wellbeing, students across Prep to Year 6 have continued to engage with the Grow Your Mind program across the past few weeks. This evidence-informed approach supports students to better understand how their brain works, while developing practical strategies to support emotional regulation, resilience, and overall mental health.
After this week, all students will have participated in at least two sessions with me, alongside additional daily “Grab 5” sessions with their classroom teachers. These short, consistent check-ins have supported students to regularly practise and begin to embed key strategies.
A focus of these sessions has been exploring the five key “animals” that represent different parts of the brain, alongside their associated brain functions:
The Guard Dog (Amygdala) – responsible for keeping us safe by scanning for danger and activating our fight, flight or freeze response. While essential, it can sometimes become overactive and trigger strong emotional reactions.
The Wise Owl (Prefrontal Cortex) – supports clear thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, and emotional regulation.
The Elephant (Hippocampus) – helps to store and recall memories, particularly those connected to learning and past experiences.
The Sifting Sooty (Reticular Activating System) – filters the vast amount of information coming into the brain, helping us to focus on what is important.
The Sensitive Octopus (Insular Cortex) – represents our emotional world, including our feelings, relationships, and capacity for empathy and connection.
In particular, students have been developing an understanding of the Guard Dog, and how it can become heightened, leading to feelings such as worry, frustration, or anger. Through this, we have been explicitly exploring how mindfulness and gratitude can help to calm this response.
Mindfulness practices encourage students to slow down, focus on their breathing, and bring their attention to the present moment. This helps signal to the brain that they are safe, allowing the Wise Owl to re-engage and support clearer, more measured thinking. Gratitude practices—such as reflecting on positive moments or identifying things they are thankful for—support a shift in attention away from stress and towards a calmer, more balanced emotional state. Together, these strategies provide students with practical tools they can use independently when they are feeling overwhelmed.
Looking ahead to the upcoming holiday period, there is a valuable opportunity to further support children’s wellbeing through rest, connection, and unstructured time. Slower days, time outdoors, and opportunities for open-ended play allow children to decompress, engage their creativity, and regulate naturally without the demands of a busy school routine.
Opportunities to connect with family and friends, alongside adequate rest and reduced structure, are important in helping children to “refill their cups.” These experiences play a significant role in supporting emotional wellbeing and ensuring students return to school feeling refreshed and ready for the term ahead.
We wish all families a safe, restful, and enjoyable holiday break. We hope this time provides opportunities for connection and quality time together, and that students return feeling recharged and ready for the term ahead.

Updates from Head of Primary (Academics)
As we come to the end of Term 1, it has been a great start to the year across the Primary School.
It has been wonderful to see students demonstrating not only academic growth, but also positive behaviours for learning.
Across the term, students have shown increasing independence, resilience, and a willingness to take on challenges. These qualities are just as important as academic achievement and are a key focus for us as a school.
I would like to acknowledge the work of our teachers and the consistency they bring to their classrooms each day. The care, professionalism and attention to student learning is reflected in the way students have settled and engaged with their learning.
We have also been hearing positive feedback from families through our recent parent teacher interviews. It has been encouraging to hear how much these conversations are valued, not just as an opportunity to connect, but as a way of working together in a genuine partnership to support your child’s learning. That shared understanding between home and school is something we value highly.
PRIME Mathematics
You may notice that your child’s Prime Mathematics workbook is not completed page by page. This is intentional.
Our teachers use these books as a resource rather than something to work through from start to finish. Teaching is responsive, and time is often spent checking for understanding, addressing misconceptions, and giving feedback as students are learning.
While this means not every page is used, it ensures that time is focused on what students need most and supports deeper understanding.
Thank you for your continued support in education and I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday break and look forward to welcoming students back for Term 2.

Year 12 Assessment Update
Year 12 Confirmation
The Rockhampton Grammar School, along with all other Queensland schools, must submit Year 12 Internal Assessment (IA1) results early in Term 2. The School will then have to upload requested student work to QCAA for review by trained confirmers. At this stage, the School is expecting results to be published by the QCAA in late May. Additionally, classroom teachers will update students once results are confirmed. The QCAA will publish individual subject results in each student Learning Account in June. If any subject results are unconfirmed, they will not appear in the student account. Please remember until the result is published by the QCAA it is considered ‘provisional’.
Year 12 QCAA External Assessment Timetable
The QCAA will publish the External Assessment (EA) timetable late in Term 2. As soon as it is released a copy will be emailed to Year 12 students and parents.
School Mock Assessment Timetable
Once the official External Assessment timetable is released by the QCAA, the School’s Mock assessment timetable will be prepared and issued to students. As a reminder, the Mocks will occur during the two week period, commencing Monday 8 September and concluding Friday 19 September. All Year 12 students are expected to attend their subject examinations and vital feedback will be provided Week 1 in Term 4.
NAPLAN
The School’s Year 7 and Year 9 students recently participated in NAPLAN. I congratulate the students on their approach to these important tests especially given delays due to issues with ACARA’s platform. The data provided by NAPLAN provides vital information regarding student progress and allows gaps in student learning to be addressed.
As a reminder, annual NAPLAN testing commenced in Australia in 2008 for all students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9. Tests are conducted in the domains of reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The Adelaide Declaration on National Goals for Schooling in the Twenty-First Century (1999) agreed to report on a state and territory basis using national key performance measures. This Declaration was supported by the Melbourne Declaration (2008), which stated ‘the learning areas of English and Mathematics were fundamental in all areas of schooling.’ It was this belief which gave rise to the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy.
Results will be sent to parents once the externally controlled marking operation is finalised. ACARA has indicated this will occur in Term 2.
GENERAL
I wish all RGS families a happy and safe Easter holiday. Hopefully, time allows you to participate in things which bring your family pleasure, such as an Easter egg hunt, completing a mega jigsaw puzzle or taking a family bike ride.
If you have any questions regarding academics or your child’s progress please feel free to contact me on [email protected] or 49360 609.

It is hard to believe how quickly the term has flown by “Looks like we made it; look how far we’ve come!” What a fantastic start it has been for our Year 7 cohort of 2026.
Over the past weeks, students have shown great enthusiasm as they have settled into high school life, built new friendships, and embraced the many opportunities that come with this exciting transition.
I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the students and watching their confidence grow, both inside and outside the classroom. From navigating new routines to tackling new learning challenges, they have demonstrated resilience, curiosity, and a willingness to give things a go, qualities we are very proud to see developing so early in the year.
As we head into the holidays, I hope students take the opportunity to rest, recharge, and spend time with family and friends. I am already looking forward to hearing their stories and highlights when we return for Term Two.
Next term, our focus will shift to the important concept of Growth Mindset. Through this topic, students will explore how their attitudes towards learning can shape their success. We will encourage them to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and recognise that effort and persistence are key to improvement. This will support them not only academically, but also in building confidence, resilience, and a positive approach to new experiences.
Thank you for your ongoing support this term. I look forward to continuing our journey together in Term Two as we keep growing, learning, and celebrating each student’s progress.

After a very busy fortnight, this week the Year 8s will complete the last of their Term 1 assessments.
I have been very proud of how students have managed themselves, especially while juggling multiple priorities. If your child has missed an examination due to absence, they will complete a catch‑up examination this week. As this is a shorter academic week, it is important that, if students know they have a catch‑up examination, they revise their work and arrive prepared.
At Assembly last week, we were reminded that from Term Two, ties must be worn each day, and students are required to wear their formal uniform every Wednesday. Please take a moment over the holidays to ensure that formal uniforms and ties are ready for the term ahead.
Today, 8G and Ms Russell departed for the first of our Year 8 Form Camps. These camps are a special opportunity for students to experience real-life learning and to strengthen friendships already forming within the class. Please keep an eye on your emails for updates about your child’s camp. We wish 8G a wonderful time away and look forward to hearing about their adventures.
On Thursday, we have our annual Cross Country Carnival at Rugby Park. This is always a fun event and a great way to celebrate the end of Term One. For students who would like to participate but are not serious runners, there is a participation race that is shorter than the competitive events. Even if your child is not keen to run, I continue to encourage Year 8s to attend and support their peers. Please note that the carnival concludes at 11:50 am and students will need to be collected from Rugby Park. I look forward to seeing all our Year 8s there.
As we move into the holidays, I encourage students to take a break from their devices and enjoy activities that are not always possible during the term such as spending time outdoors, enjoying nature, preparing a meal for the family, or catching up with friends. Whatever they choose to do, I wish all our Year 8s a safe and relaxing break and look forward to welcoming them back next term.

As we bring Term 1 to a close, I want to acknowledge the way Year 9 has settled into secondary routines and the positive tone the cohort has built across classrooms, Form classes, and the wider school.
Students have grown in confidence with organisation, expectations, and daily responsibilities. It has been pleasing to see so many take genuine pride in presenting well and contributing positively to the Year 9 culture.
This term has also offered many opportunities for students to connect with the broader RGS community. From Meet the Teachers and the RGS Swimming Carnival in the early weeks, through to key school events, activities, and sporting teams, students have been encouraged to get involved, have a go, and represent themselves and the school well.
A consistent focus this term has been leadership development through our wellbeing programme. Students have explored a range of leadership attributes and how these apply to everyday choices, including discussions about integrity and what it looks like in friendships, learning, online behaviour, and taking responsibility for mistakes. These conversations have been grounded in our RGS values of respect, honesty, integrity, endeavour, and community. When students act in line with these values, it strengthens trust, improves learning environments, and supports the kind of culture we want for Year 9.
Year 9 also completed NAPLAN during the March testing window, and I was very impressed by the way students approached the process. They were calm, focused, well‑behaved, and adaptable with timetable changes, demonstrating great maturity. Thank you to families for supporting students to arrive prepared each day; this preparation makes a real difference.
In recent weeks, students have managed significant assessment demands across most subjects. Completing assessments well requires planning, consistent effort, and the ability to manage pressure. Many students should feel proud of the way they have finished the term. I encourage them to reflect on what worked well, what did not, and which small changes could support further improvement in Term Two.
Looking ahead, Term Two provides a fresh opportunity to reset goals and lift standards even further. The most effective starting point is simple: arrive prepared, stay organised, ask for help early, and continue living the values that underpin success at RGS. I hope all Year 9 students and families enjoy a well‑earned break, and I look forward to another strong term together.

Term 1 has flown by, and it is hard to believe we have already reached the final week of the term.
I would like to take this opportunity to commend our Year 10 students on what has been a highly positive and productive start to the year. As assessments draw to a close, there is a clear sense of achievement across the cohort. Students have approached their academic responsibilities with increasing maturity and resilience, and I could not be prouder of the way they have applied themselves. The unity, initiative, and willingness to support one another have been standout characteristics and strong indicators of the year ahead.
It has been particularly pleasing to see so many students embracing the Certificate I in Active Volunteering. A number are already nearing completion of their required hours, an outstanding achievement at this stage of the year. Their contribution to the community reflects not only commitment to the programme, but also a genuine sense of service and leadership. For those yet to begin, or who may have fallen behind, I strongly encourage a proactive approach in Term Two. Consistent progress now will ease pressure later in the year and support the successful completion of this qualification.
As we move into Term Two, an important milestone will be the commencement of the SET Plan (Senior Education and Training Plan) process. Information will be distributed in the first week back. The SET Plan is essential in shaping each student’s senior pathway, helping them make informed subject selections based on strengths, interests, and future aspirations. It also creates an opportunity for meaningful conversations between students, families, and staff to ensure each young person is well positioned for success in Years 11 and 12 and beyond. I encourage families to engage actively in this process and continue discussions at home around goals and pathways.
A reminder that if your child will be absent for more than three school days due to early departure, a Request for Extended Leave form must be completed ahead of the absence. This process ensures students remain up to date with their learning and assessment requirements.
Thank you to parents and caregivers for your ongoing support throughout this busy and demanding term. Your partnership plays a vital role in the success and wellbeing of our students, and it is greatly appreciated.
As we approach the Easter break, I wish all families a safe, restful, and enjoyable holiday. I look forward to welcoming our Year 10 students back refreshed and ready to embrace the opportunities of Term Two.
“Excellence is not an act, but a habit built through consistent effort and commitment.”

As we come to the end of Term 1, I hope all Year 11 students enjoy a well‑earned break with family and friends.
It has been a jam‑packed term, adapting to the Senior system and its requirements, completing first assessments, and learning to balance study, wellbeing, physical activity, and personal time. It is a significant adjustment, and the upcoming holidays are the perfect opportunity to reset, refresh, and establish goals for Term Two.
A reminder regarding absences of three days or more, or extension requests:
Extension forms must be completed for all assessment extensions. These must be submitted to me (Head of Year) or to the SSO if I am unavailable, at least 48 hours prior to the assessment due date, accompanied by appropriate evidence (e.g., medical certificate). Forms are available on Student Hill.
For extended absences (three or more days) , please ensure a Secondary School Extended Leave form is submitted, with evidence attached where required. This form is located on Parent Lounge → School Links → Attendance.
As we reach the end of term, it can be challenging for some students to maintain the same energy and enthusiasm they demonstrated earlier. These moments call for the strategies they have been developing around grit, perseverance, and resilience. It is important for students to recognise that even simple tasks can require varying levels of determination and resilience in order to reach personal goals. The SchoolTV resilience resources (https://rgs.qld.schooltv.me/newsletter/resilience) may be a useful starting point for those needing motivation.
I wish all Year 11 students a fantastic break and look forward to seeing everyone back refreshed for Term 2.

It is hard to believe we have reached the end of Term 1.
It may feel like a lifetime ago, or just yesterday, that our Year 12s began their final year of schooling, but here we are. It has been a big term, full of energy, effort, and many memorable moments.
The Formal was certainly a highlight. Seeing students, their families, and friends celebrating together is always a privilege. A huge thank you to Mrs Wright, Mrs Tregea, and Ms Thomasson, who were integral to planning and delivering the event. Their organisation behind the scenes ensured everything ran seamlessly.
The Easter Raffle will be drawn on 31 March and continues to support our fundraising efforts for both the Formal and Valedictory. Thank you to everyone who has contributed through ticket sales, donations, or prize support, it is greatly appreciated.
We also acknowledged outstanding academic effort and success at the Academic Assembly, an important reminder that hard work and consistency truly pay off. Congratulations to all award recipients for setting such a strong example of commitment and focus.
Final Week Reminders
The term concludes with our House Cross Country, a Prep to Year 12 event held at Rugby Park on Thursday, 2 April .
Students are to be dropped off and collected from Rugby Park.
Please note there is no school on Friday due to the Good Friday public holiday.
A reminder that Term Two begins at full pace, with several assessments due in Week 1. Students are encouraged to maintain steady progress over the holidays to ease pressure when classes resume. A little preparation now will make a significant difference later.
To our boarding students, safe travels home and best wishes for a well‑earned break. I hope everyone finds time to rest, reset, and enjoy time with family.
Thank you for your continued support throughout the term. I look forward to another productive and positive Term Two with our Year 12 cohort.

It is great to witness students making impressive progress in developing the core leadership attributes that underpin the wellbeing programme.
This term’s focus on Respect and Care has provided valuable opportunities for students to practise being collaborative, communicative, respectful and supportive of one another (amongst others) all within the broader framework of Leading Self , Leading with Others and Changing Your World .
A recent highlight was witnessing the collaborative efforts of students in an inter-form challenge to name flags, identify celebrities from images of their eyes only, and find common connections between concepts. Effective communication – a key element of leading with others – was definitely on display.
At the same time, students have continued to build their capacity for Leading Self .
Many have shown growing awareness of the importance of making positive lifestyle choices, particularly in relation to physical activity, maintaining healthy dietary habits and developing consistent, restorative sleep routines. These foundations are essential for both wellbeing and effective leadership.
Self-awareness has also seen recent growth. Through career exploration activities, students have demonstrated thoughtful reflection on their strengths, interests and future pathways. This ability to understand themselves is a critical step in becoming confident and purposeful leaders who can contribute meaningfully to their communities.
In a similar vein, students have reflected on places they belong and the cultural elements this includes as opportunities to ensure a safe, inclusive, harmonious environment in which all belong.
I will close with one students’ perspective on becoming a better collaborator: care about others, their ideas, their beliefs and their personalities, and, when needed address conflict in non-judgemental ways. I look forward to continuing to witness these principles in action as students develop the Attributes of Leadership.

Catch up on the RGS Library news in Term 1!
Last week saw the close of the Globe at Night project for the southern hemisphere. I want to thank our boarders and school community for generously gathering data for light pollution in our area and putting Rockhampton on the Globe at Night map! To see our contribution, click here
It has been a very busy Term One in the library. The secondary students have been engaging in Atomic Reading and this time we played Who wrote it better? Students had to finish off a book blurb to entice potential readers and entertain their classmates! Then we compared their book blurbs to the authors. I believe we have some budding authors in Years 8,9 and 10.
Year 11 and 12 have been exploring the information support tools we have created for Modern History and Legal studies.
The library team has enjoyed going back in history with the year 1s and 2s. Both grades have used their curiosity, imagination and problem solving skills to interpret many photos and other artefacts about past years in Rockhampton and RGS. This week the Yr 2’s staged a very persuasive old time class photo!
Year 5 have been exploring natural disasters through picture books, merge cubes and other media in the library. Year 4 have been brushing up on their information use skills and can confidently find books and information independently. They have also explored all the digital features available on our Britannica database.
We encourage all our students to read over the holidays as there are so many wonderful benefits to reading. All students should be sure to return any books they have finished reading so that others can enjoy reading these books for themselves. For those curious about the latest information on reading rates in Australia – it’s not all bad news. There are some positive findings, for example, “Comfort is one of the top emotions associated with reading by Australians”. Here is the snapshot of the Australia Reads report .
The library team wish everyone an enjoyable break and encourage everyone to get comfy with a book.

Term 1 Careers and VET news.
RGS Careers Newsletter Issue 5, 2026
Term 1 Wrap Up
I’d like to thank all students all for their effort and commitment in their career education, vocational studies and upcoming work experience.
This term, the Year 10s have started looking into their career pathways to help inform their choices for senior subjects through a task they have completed during Form. Students identified their skills and attributes, how they translate into career options and how their current career choices will shape their senior subject selections. Next term I will hold a SET Plan Career evening where you can learn about the different subjects on offer here at RGS, as well as a range of vocational education certificates you can study while at school, as well as school-based apprenticeship information. Please refer to the email sent from RGS notices on Friday 20 March for further details, or the attached newsletter.
It’s been great to see the Year 11s start a range of VET courses this term and see some successfully pursuing their passions, and others realising that perhaps that path isn’t exactly for them and working towards a new goal. Career pathways are not linear, and is all about experiences, both good and bad, to help shape future careers.
The 12s have been very proactive in meeting with me to discuss university applications and work experience opportunities to hopefully lead to apprenticeships next year. More details regarding QTAC applications will be shared as they become available. It was great to have a session with Year 12s last Friday for them to reflect on their career goal from the end of Year 11 and see how they are progressing towards their goal, or take some time to reflect on what has changed and identify a new focus for the remainder of the year.
Enjoy a well-earned break over the holidays and take time to rest, recharge and reflect on all that you have achieved in the first term of the year. When you return for Term 2, come ready to build on what you’ve learned and continue developing your practical knowledge and confidence, and participate in as many opportunities as possible.
Have a safe and happy Easter. See you next term!
