SchoolTV Topic of the Week – Cybersafety

Young people today are growing up in an increasingly connected world where technology is part of their everyday lives –– for learning, socialising, and entertainment. While the digital world offers enormous benefits, it also comes with serious risks.

From cyberbullying and online predators to inappropriate content and screen time concerns, navigating the online environment can be challenging for young people and their families. Cybersafety is not just about blocking access –– it's about empowering young people with the knowledge and skills they need to use technology responsibly and safely. This includes understanding privacy settings, recognising scams, and developing healthy digital habits. At the same time, it's important for parents and caregivers to stay informed, have open and judgement-free conversations with their children, and lead by example through positive online behaviour.

In today's digital age, safeguarding a child's wellbeing must also include protecting their online life. This edition of SchoolTV will help you better understand the digital landscape your child is navigating and offer practical strategies to help them stay safe, confident and in control online.

SchoolTV is a unique online resource delivering powerful and credible information to empower parents with the skills to address common issues facing young people today. SchoolTV can be accessed any time by RGS parents through the School website under Learn With Us > Student Wellbeing

GenAI at RGS

Our Vision

Our Vision

At The Rockhampton Grammar School, we’re excited to be embracing the possibilities of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in a way that aligns with our strong values and commitment to student growth.

We first introduced GenAI to parents and families at our Meet the Teachers event earlier this year. Since then, key staff have completed in-depth training to ensure we’re ready to support our students and teachers in navigating this rapidly changing technology. This work is helping RGS stay at the forefront of AI in education, while building the tools and resources needed to use it meaningfully and responsibly.

Our vision for GenAI at RGS is simple: We recognise the transformative potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in education. Our approach to GenAI is grounded in our longstanding commitment to excellence, innovation, and human-centred learning. The School aims to create an environment where GenAI enhances educational experiences, fosters innovation and leadership, and prepares our students for success in a technology-driven world, while maintaining our core values and academic integrity .

Our Framework: Supporting Safe, Ethical, and Effective Learning

Our Framework: Supporting Safe, Ethical, and Effective Learning

To guide our approach, we will implement the SEE framework , which ensures AI is used Safely , Ethically , and Effectively across all year levels. All students will undertake learning experiences that develop these essential capabilities, with implementation carefully tailored to developmental stages and guided by the Australian Curriculum.

Safe use of AI means protecting our students, staff, and school systems from harm. We’re teaching students how to keep their personal information secure and understand the risks and boundaries of interacting with AI tools. Just as importantly, we’re helping them see that while AI can be helpful, it will never replace the value of real relationships, empathy, and human insight. Our approach ensures students develop a healthy understanding of age-appropriate AI use, building their confidence to navigate digital tools responsibly as they grow and mature.

Ethical use of AI reflects our school values and ensures all interactions with AI tools are conducted with integrity. Students learn to be transparent about when and how they’ve used AI and to always represent their learning truthfully. Most importantly, we teach students to consider the impact of their AI use on others, ensuring they never use these tools in ways that could cause harm to their peers, teachers, or broader community.

Effective use of AI focuses on helping students harness AI to support, innovate, and enhance their learning experiences. Our students are learning how to ask great questions, think critically about AI-generated content, and use these tools to deepen their thinkingβ€”not just speed up their work. We want students to see AI as a thinking partner that helps them refine ideas, explore different perspectives, and grow their creativityβ€”not take over from it. Tool selection skills will guide students to ensure they are using the right tools in the right ways.

Looking Ahead

Looking Ahead

Through the SEE framework, we’re building a strong foundation for our students to become capable, responsible, and thoughtful users of AI. As this technology continues to evolve, so too will our approachβ€”always with the aim of equipping students with the skills and understanding they need to thrive in a digital world, while staying grounded in the human-centred values that define RGS.

Primary News

Head of Primary - Mrs Kate Harris

Head of Primary - Mrs Kate Harris

In a recent assembly, we spoke with students about the power of wordsβ€”how they can lift others up or weigh them down.

When dealing with verbal altercations, one phrase we often hear is, "It was just a joke." While something may feel funny to one person, it can land very differently with someone else.

We reminded students that we never truly know what someone else might be carrying. A careless commentβ€”even made in passingβ€”can cut deeply. On the other hand, a kind word, offered sincerely, can build confidence, restore a sense of belonging, and remind someone that they matter.

Kindness and respectful communication are also essential to developing resilience. Children are far more likely to bounce back from challenges when they feel safe, supported, and respected. Importantly, resilience isn’t just about bouncing back β€”it’s about bouncing forward : learning, growing, and becoming stronger through the challenges we face. When kindness is the norm, it builds trust and confidenceβ€”and teaches children how to treat others, especially when things are difficult.

This message isn’t just for our students. As adults, we model these values every dayβ€”through how we speak with our children, how we talk about and to teachers, and how we demonstrate respect in both written and spoken communication. Children learn as much from what they observe as from what they are told.

We encourage you to continue these conversations at home. Ask your child how they like to be spoken to. Talk about how it feels when someone is kindβ€”and how words can hurt, even when not meant to. Putting kindness at the centre of our actions and interactions will make our community a kinder and safer space for everyone.

Thank you for partnering with us in this important work.

Meet Mrs Bekker – Primary Learning Support Teacher

We are pleased to continue introducing the dedicated members of our Primary Learning Enrichment Team. In this edition of our newsletter, we warmly welcome and introduce Mrs Bekker , our Primary Learning Support Teacher.

Mrs Bekker joined our school community at the beginning of 2025 and has already made a wonderful impact. She has settled in beautifully, bringing with her a gentle, calm presence that creates a nurturing and supportive environment for our students.

Students thoroughly enjoy working with Mrs Bekker. Her kind and thoughtful approach ensures that every learner feels safe, valued, and encouraged to take risks and grow in their learning journey.

We invite you to enjoy learning a little more about Mrs Bekker and the passion she brings to her role.

What is a brief background of your educational experience?
I have primarily worked in early years classrooms, where I developed a strong foundation in fostering young learners' growth. My passion for supporting students' literacy and numeracy skills led me to transition into a learning support role. This shift allowed me to work more closely with individual students and small groups, tailoring instruction to meet diverse learning needs and helping each child reach their full potential.

What inspired you to pursue a career in education?
I have always found joy in working with children and supporting their growth. Witnessing the moment a child grasps a new concept or overcomes a challenge is incredibly rewarding. This passion for nurturing young minds and making a positive impact on their learning journey inspired me to pursue a career in education.

How do you like to spend your time outside of school?
Outside of school, I enjoy immersing myself in activities that foster creativity and relaxation. Reading is a particular passion of mine, allowing me to explore new ideas and perspectives. I also engage in arts and crafts, which provide a creative outlet and enhance my attention to detail. Spending quality time with my pets brings joy.

What is a memorable moment you've had with a student or colleague?
Throughout my teaching career, I've been fortunate to have numerous memorable moments, making it challenging to single out just one. However, the moments that resonate most deeply are when students experience breakthroughs in their reading journey. Observing a child transition from hesitant decoding to fluent reading, and eventually discovering genuine enjoyment in literature, is profoundly rewarding.

What is something most people might not know about you?
I was born overseas.

RGS Celebrates National Simultaneous Storytime 2025
On Wednesday, 21 May 2025, our primary school proudly participated in the 25th annual National Simultaneous Storytime , joining over two million children across Australia in a shared reading experience. At exactly 12:00pm AEST, students gathered in classes to read this year's selected book, The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel and illustrated by Danny Snell.

The Truck Cat tells the heartwarming story of Tinka, a cat who travels with his human, Yacoub, a migrant truck driver navigating life in a new country. When they are briefly separated, their journey to reunite explores themes of immigration, identity, and the meaning of home.

Our students were captivated by the beautifully illustrated tale, sparking engaging discussions about belonging, resilience, and the diverse experiences that shape our community. Events like this highlight the power of storytelling to connect us all and reinforce the joy of reading.

Thank you to all the staff and students who made this event a memorable success!

Author in Residence: Dr Cameron Stelzer, The Story Doctor
As part of our ongoing commitment to improving literacy and increasing student engagement in writing, The Rockhampton Grammar School has invited author and illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer to be our Author in Residence from Monday 2 to Thursday 5 June.

This school-led initiative provides a unique opportunity for our Prep to Year 6 students to engage directly with a published author and illustrator. Prep students will enjoy an interactive Big Screen Book Reading and follow-along drawing session. Students in Years 1–6 will take a behind-the-scenes look at the book creation process and participate in writing workshops focused on idea generation, narrative development, and the use of exciting, descriptive language.

This experience aligns with our whole-school literacy focus, and we are looking forward to four inspiring days that will support and enhance our students’ love of writing and storytelling.

In conjunction with the Author Visit, Rockhampton Grammar families have a special opportunity to purchase signed and personalised copies of Cameron’s books at special prices. Individual books are $10-$15 each and there are also exclusive book sets available. Students will receive an order form on the day of the workshops (payment is via the online payment portal listed on the form; no cash). Forms can be returned the following day, to the Primary Reception.

Information from Head of Secondary School (Academics).

Year 12 QCAA External Assessment
Last week, the QCAA issued the official External Assessment timetable for 2025. I provided all Year 12 students and parents, caregivers with an electronic copy. Parents can also find a copy at the end of this edition of the School’s Newsletter or onΒ  the QCAA website at QCAA external assessment timetable 2025

The QCAA does not seek feedback on the schedule. Additionally, QCAA will oversee any clashes and RGS will be notified of specific details over the coming month. Relevant students will be notified once details are know.

Year 12 MOCK timetable
Given the official EA schedule has been released, the School’s Mock timetable can now be prepared. It will be issued prior to the end of this term.

Year 12 Confirmation
As previously reported, The Rockhampton Grammar School, submittedΒ Year 12 Internal Assessment (IA1/2) results at the end of Term 1. The School subsequentlyΒ uploaded sample student work to QCAA. This work was reviewed by trained confirmersΒ early in Term 2. Presently, the School has 19 of 23 subjects returned and except for one subject (with a one mark move for 2 students) all were confirmed and approved. It is hoped the remaining four subjects are received in the coming fortnight. QCAA will publish subject results in each Year 12 student Learning Account shortly. If any result remains unconfirmed at the release date, it will not appear in the student account.

Head of Year 7 - Ms Aleisha Tuaine

As we move into Week 6, Year 7 students are fast approaching the busiest time of the term. Assessment is well underway in several subjects, with many more students completing drafts and revising for exams just around the corner.

In last Tuesday’s Year 7 Enrichment session, we were fortunate to have Mrs Matheson, our Head of Humanities, speak to the cohort about their upcoming History task. During her presentation, she introduced them to the adage: β€œFailure to plan is planning to fail” β€”a sentiment that could not be more relevant for our Year 7 students! The next few weeks will be busy, so your support in encouraging regular homework completion and revision at home is greatly appreciated.

I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to every family who contributed to our Hands of Support collection. Despite the short collection window, I was overwhelmed by the generosity of those who donated. A representative from the Mayor’s office collected our items to be distributed at the major Hands of Support event, held last Thursday at the Showgrounds. For those who were unable to contribute this time, we will have another collection in Term 4 for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal.

In Tutorial lessons over the past fortnight, we have continued our exploration of Growth Mindset . We have focused on the power of language in transforming fixed mindsets into growth mindsets, and last week, we discussed how balancing the risk of failure against newly acquired skills can lead to personal growth. There was strong agreement that the risk has been worth the reward. As we move deeper into the assessment period, it is more important than ever to maintain a growth mindset.

From time to time, students and families raise concerns about incidents on social media. This remains a challenging area to navigateβ€”for both students and adults. In November 2024, the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024 introduced a mandatory minimum age of 16 for accessing social media platforms. These laws will come into effect at the end of this year. We therefore remind students that they should not yet be using social media platforms, for their own safety and wellbeing.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

It is hard to believe we are already in the second half of Term 2!

In Form and Tutorial lessons, we have continued our focus on Character Strengths . All Year 8 classes have now completed the Character Strength Assessment and have enjoyed comparing their most and least dominant strengths. These discussions have provided valuable insights into how our strengths shape our behaviour and experiences.

Through a variety of activities and discussions, we are beginning to explore how to grow and develop these strengths. Over the past week, we have focused on Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence , Curiosity , Perseverance , Teamwork , and Zest . We look forward to discovering even more character strengths in the coming weeks.

Exams and Assessments
With assessments and exams fast approaching, we encourage families to support their children during this crucial period. A balanced approachβ€”healthy eating, good sleep, focused study time, and adequate restβ€”is essential. Maintaining a positive mindset is just as important as academic preparation, and we will continue to reinforce this at school.

Please ensure that you check the assessment schedule and refer to the student diary to stay organised and ready for the weeks ahead.

Year 9 students are currently participating in gender-specific form groups as part of the What About Me programme.

This initiative will culminate in a four-day schedule of activities during the final week of term, including the What About Me camp. A letter outlining the proposed activities and requirements will be sent to parents later this week. This camp is a core component of the Year 9 pastoral development programme and is therefore considered compulsory. The experience will conclude with a celebration on the final day of Term 2. For those planning holiday travel, the day will finish by 11:00 am, allowing for an early start.

Students are reminded to check their assessment and examination timetables carefully. With exams approaching and schedules already distributed, it is essential that all students begin their preparation early.

In the coming weeks, we will also begin discussions with students around subject selection for Year 10. While it may seem early, we encourage families to start talking about career interests and goals. Exploring these ideas now will help students make informed choices when subject selection opens next term.

Year 10 students are quickly approaching the busiest part of the term.

Assessment is already underway in several subjects, and many students are completing drafts and preparing for upcoming exams. While it is natural for students to feel some pressure at this time of term, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns about your child.

Last week, Marine students enjoyed an excursion, and several students shared how much they enjoyed the experience. In Form and Tutorial, Year 10 students have been exploring the Kloodle platform and continuing their Certificate I in Active Volunteering. Kloodle is a dynamic digital tool that supports student development by capturing examples of character and skill growth.

It was fantastic to see so many Year 10 students participating in the Rocky River Run over the weekend. Reports indicate they made both themselves and the school proud, and I’m grateful for their involvement.

Unfortunately, illness has impacted the cohort recently, resulting in some extensions to assessment deadlines. If your child is unwell and concerned about meeting deadlines, please get in touch so we can make the necessary arrangements. A sincere thank you to those who have already contacted us. Additionally, if your child has accrued a significant number of absences across Terms 1 and 2, please ensure you provide medical certificates either directly to me or to the Secondary School Office so we can account for these absences appropriately.

We are about to enter a very busy periodβ€”assessment time!

Please check in with your child during this time, as stress levels can rise. If your child is feeling overwhelmed, please send me an email so we can offer appropriate support. Do not forget about the tutorials available on Friday afternoons during study hall.

In the coming weeks, I will be asking students to nominate for several leadership committees. Applications will soon open for the Christmas and Valentine’s Day Committee and the Formal Committee . All applications must be supported by a parent or guardian, so please have a conversation with your child if they are interested. For all other leadership positions, applications are due by 9:00 am on Friday, 9 September. Students intending to apply for leadership roles in 2026 must attend the Year 11 Leadership Workshop Days on Wednesday, 10 and Thursday, 11September.

At The Rockhampton Grammar School, we are committed to preparing students for life beyond the classroom. Kloodle is a valuable platform supporting this goal, helping students document and reflect on their skills, achievements, and personal development. Whether through sport, leadership, community service or work experience, Kloodle allows students to build a digital portfolio that showcases their strengths. Parents can support this process by encouraging their child to update their profile regularly and celebrate their achievements along the way.

Finally, in our ever-evolving digital world, I’d like to recommend a valuable cybersafety resource by expert Susan McLean:

Year 12 students have demonstrated courage, resilience, and determination over recent weeks while finalising their second internal assessment tasks.

I commend their perseverance and am confident they will continue to display these qualities as they undertake their final internal pieces.

I would like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our student leaders over the past few weeks. The Show Cattle Team took part in the Callide Valley Show; our Music Captains assisted with Eisteddfod preparations; and DMTA Captains worked diligently to support younger students in the Eisteddfod dance groups, achieving exceptional results. Our Boarding Chairs helped staff during National Boarding Week, and the Cancer Awareness Committee hosted a very successful High Tea on Saturday, 17 May.

Additionally, Year 8 Form Seniors have supported camps at Ritamada, while Year 9 Form Seniors have helped facilitate the What About Me programme.

This term, students have also broadened their perspectives on socio-economic and generational diversity. They have watched interviews with centenarians and explored the topic of online bullying through a TED Talk by Dylan Marron titled Empathy is Not Endorsement .

Anticipation is growing for the upcoming Formal at the end of term. Dance lessons are well underway, and students have quickly picked up the routines. These sessions will resume two weeks before the event, and I look forward to seeing their efforts on the night!

Upcoming events include:

Year 12 Ritamada Day – Tuesday, 3 June

Athletics Carnival – Friday, 13 June

Academically, it is important to note that many subjects have draft submissions due right up to the end of term. Students are encouraged to prepare thoroughly, as the majority of final assessments are scheduled in the first four weeks of Term 3. This can be an intense period, so effective time management is essential.

* Looking ahead, students will also:

* Participate in the Interhouse Touch competition on Sunday

* Take part in the Senior Oratory competition on Tuesday night

* Attend Ritamada on Tuesday (10:30 am – 3:30 pm) for a focus day on physical health, nutrition, social wellbeing, and mental fitness

I look forward to spending this final Ritamada Day with the Year 12 cohort.

National Boarding Week!

Dear Boarding Family,

Each month, I prepare a report for the School Board to report on key aspects of our Boarding Programme. For our β€˜May Report’ there was a significant focus on National Boarding Week, for obvious reasons. Due to the significance of this week in the lives of our Boarding Community, I share this part of my report:

National Boarding Week 2025 was a significant and deeply meaningful occasion for The Rockhampton Grammar School, offering a dedicated opportunity to shine a bright spotlight on the boarders, their families, and the entire boarding community. This annual event continues to grow in significance and scale, and this year’s celebrations were some of the most memorable to date.

The week commenced with the inaugural β€œBoarder Bash”, a vibrant community gathering co-hosted with Emmaus College. This event brought together Day and Boarding families, alumni, staff, and members of the wider Rockhampton community. The evening was a celebration of shared experience, with football matches, live music, and a festive atmosphere enhanced by high-quality food and drink. Importantly, it also served as a fundraising event, with proceeds supporting both the Grammar School Rugby Club and the Boarder Parent Association Committee. It was a true demonstration of collaboration, spirit, and community.

On Monday morning, the now-traditional Pancake Breakfast was hosted by the boarders for the entire School community. This event not only provided a literal β€œtaste” of boarding life but also symbolised the warm and generous spirit of the boarding community. It offered the wider school body a tangible insight into the everyday experience of boarders and marked a vibrant start to the week’s festivities.

Boarding featured prominently across both School Assemblies. The first Assembly focused on this year’s National Boarding Week theme, β€œThreads of Connection”, with two boarders sharing personal stories of their generational ties to the School. Their reflections on walking the same halls as their parents and grandparents underscored the deep roots and lasting legacy of boarding at The Rockhampton Grammar School.

The second Assembly offered a lighter but equally insightful look into boarding life, through a β€œDay in the Life of a Boarder” video. This engaging and humorous presentation was introduced by two of the School’s youngest boarders from the Primary School, whose presence further demonstrated the breadth and inclusivity of the boarding community.

Midweek saw the School come together in joyous celebration with a whole-school β€œJust Dance” event held in the Space Frame. Later that day, in what has become an eagerly anticipated showdown, the Boarding Staff once again claimed victory over the Boarding Students in the annual Volleyball Match, continuing an impressive winning streak.

Thursday evening was particularly significant, with The Rockhampton Grammar School serving as the Central Queensland β€œhub” for the state-wide Student Boarding Leaders’ Forum. This concurrent event highlighted the leadership, vision, and voices of boarding students from across the state. Simultaneously, the boarding community enjoyed the inaugural β€œDorm vs Dorm Talent Show”, an evening filled with laughter, creativity, and spirited competition. The standout performance – and eventual winner – was the Year 6–9 boys’ heartfelt and entertaining rendition of β€œPiano Man”, which captured the crowd and judges alike.

The final weekend saw the conclusion of the celebrations with a specially hosted Boarding Experience, allowing Day Students to explore the facilities and culture of boarding life at Grammar. This was followed by an afternoon of Inflatables and then the β€œTaste of Country”, which transformed the Space Frame into a rustic country barn, complete with BBQ brisket and a mechanical bull. It was a fitting finale to a week that celebrated every facet of boarding lifeβ€”tradition, community, leadership, and joy.

National Boarding Week 2025 was a powerful reminder of the unique role boarding plays in the life of The Rockhampton Grammar School. It honoured the contributions of boarders past and present, fostered community spirit, and celebrated the connections that make Grammar Boarding not only a place to live and learn, but a place to belong. The boarders truly deserved a week as special as this.

Boarding β€œSoft Skills”
On a more practical note, in a recent β€œWhat’s On” I brought to your attention recent concerns, across the grades, of the use of technology and online interactions. Boarding should create an environment where we can support the growth of β€œsoft skills”. As we continue to support our boarders in navigating an increasingly digital world, the safe use of technology and online interactions remains a top β€œsoft skill” priority. In this environment, young people are constantly exposed to a range of online experiences, some of which can pose significant risks to their wellbeing. Educating students about responsible digital behaviour is a core part of our care, but we recognise that our efforts are most effective when reinforced at home. By working in close partnership with our families, we can ensure that consistent messages about online safety are being communicated and upheld. Together, we can help our boarders make smart decisions and grow resilience they need to interact safely and respectfully in digital spaces. Your involvement and vigilance play a vital role in this shared responsibility. If you see any concerning patterns or behaviours at home, do please connect with your Head of Year.

Congratulations to Dodgers and Lightning for winning their divisions and to Suns for being runner up.
