Thank you to everyone who supported this year's RGS Carols in the Frame.
The fun-filled evening truly captured the Christmas spirit with wonderful performances from RGS Primary and Seconday students, along with RGS staff. Thank you to everyone who helped with the stalls in the Spaceframe and for those on BBQ cooking duties. It was also amazing to get a visit from Santa! This year's event raised over $2500 with proceeds supporting Soldier On, YOU CHOOSE, and the Salvation Army.
Dear Parents,
Last week our primary students participated in carnivals across two days. I thank you for your understanding as we changed times for the senior carnival to manage increasing temperatures over the week. I want to take a moment to commend our students for their resilience and admirable conduct during the recent swimming carnivals. Their sportsmanship, enthusiasm, and support for each other were evident, making the event a true celebration of our school spirit. We are also grateful to our Year 12 and Year 10 helpers, who demonstrated exemplary behaviour and served as outstanding role models for younger students.
Acknowledgment must go to our dedicated staff who supported the students throughout, with special acknowledgement to our Deputy Principal, Mrs Spark, who will be retiring at the end of the year. Her commitment to the sport of swimming over 25 years has enriched our school in countless ways, and her legacy in this area will be warmly remembered.
As we approach the end of the year, our focus on class placements is well underway. I’d like to thank parents who have met with me to discuss complex matters related to this process. I understand the importance of these placements and appreciate your understanding that, once classes are determined, single changes can no longer be accommodated without affecting the entire structure. We aim to build supportive and balanced classes that will set every child up for success in the coming year.
We’re also pleased to offer a transition morning, where children will meet their teacher and new classmates before the year ends. This session is designed to help reduce any anxieties, giving students a sense of comfort and familiarity heading into the holidays. I would like to remind parents that this is not the time to challenge the class placements or request a different teacher, as these decisions have been carefully considered for the benefit of all students.
Additionally, we will soon be announcing new teachers joining our team for 2025. Once the recruitment process is complete, we look forward to introducing them to our community.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we finish the year on a strong note.
Warm regards,
For my final newsletter item as Deputy Head of Primary (Students & Operations), I would like to share a poem with you. It was a favourite of my Mother’s, and she also took on a Deputy Principal role after many years teaching.
Unity
I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there,
The clay they used was a young child’s mind
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher, the tools that were used
Were books and music and art;
One a parent, with a guiding hand
And a gentle, loving heart.
Day after day the teacher toiled
With touch that was deft and sure,
While the parent laboured by their side
And polished and smoothed it o’er.
And when at last their task was done,
They were proud of what they had wrought
For the things they had moulded into the child
Could neither be sold nor bought.
And they agreed they would have failed
If they had worked alone,
For behind the parent stood the School,
And behind the teacher, the Home.
By Cleo V. Swarat
Working with children and teaching has long been my passion and I look forward to assisting in relief positions when required later next year. Take care of your health, as without it, very little else matters. To your wellbeing and happiness and to great partnerships between Home and School.
Primary Academic News
Curriculum Celebration
We have had a huge term of learning at RGS Primary. Our students in Years 3 to 6 have been engaged in a novel study with teachers implementing explicit lessons based on the Science of Learning.
Our Year 4 students have been delving into Kensuke’s Kingdom throughout Term 4 and we have had amazing feedback from students about how much they are enjoying this book. Some students reported that were crying tears of joy and cheering in the final chapter. They also indicated that they didn’t realise reading could be so fun. What a wonderful experience to have such a love of reading and learning!
Primary Academic Awards 2024
Just a reminder, our curriculum team has been collaboratively working on amendments to the academic award criteria to align more closely with the curriculum and to celebrate individual academic achievements.
The new Macte Litteris Excellence Award and the Macte Litteris Achievement Award will be replacing the previous pennant system. These awards will be based on overall academic performance rather than being subject specific. The revised academic awards also recognise and award individual achievement, rather than being based on cohort performances.
Where there is an allowance outlined in the criteria below for a student to be receiving a result that is not an ‘A’, they must be achieving a ‘C’ standard or above to be eligible to receive these academic awards.
Macte Litteris Excellence Award
Awarded to each student who achieves a total of seven ‘A’s on their Student Academic Report. Four ‘A’s must be achieved in English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences and at least three A’s in Technologies, Visual Arts, Music, Health and Physical Education, Japanese and Cooking (if applicable.)
Macte Litteris Achievement Award
Awarded to each student who achieves a total of six ‘A’s. At least three ‘A’s must be achieved in English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences. Technologies, Visual Arts, Music, Health and Physical Education, Japanese and Cooking (if applicable.)
The Macte Virtute Award will be replacing the previous Growth Awards to capture growth in character in alignment with our School values. The criteria for this award is outlined below.
Macte Virtute Award
Awarded to two students in each class who have demonstrated continuous development and growth in character. The recipients of these awards must demonstrate the school values of Integrity and Honour; Respect and Care; Endeavour and Responsibility; and Courage and Resilience. This award is selected by the classroom teacher.
We look forward to celebrating the success of our primary students during the Speech Day assembly later in the term.
RGS Primary Learning Enrichment 2024 Review.
As the year draws to a close, we are celebrating the fantastic effort and dedication to improvement we have seen in the primary school.
MacqLit and MiniLit Programmes
This was our first reading running MultiLit reading programs. They have been very successful due to their evidence-based approach, high quality staff, home reading support and of course student commitment and effort.
All students improved their reading fluency rate some by more than 100%! Several students graduated from the programs due to their high improvement. We cannot wait to see how students continue to improve in 2025.
To make sure that students continue to improve it is important that they read out loud with an adult over the holidays to consolidate what they have learnt this year.
Great job everybody!
Extension Writing
Students in our extension writing groups meet once a week to build on their strengths in writing. Below are some excerpts from writing tasks completed this term. Students have been focusing on intentional use of sentence structure with a particular emphasis on the power of a sharp simple sentence:
Natalia 4K
"DAD!" I shouted. Big mistake. Very... Big... mistake.
The kraken finally noticed the small piece of remaining boat and slumbered towards me. It was huge, with 8 giant tentacles and a ring of razor sharp fangs. I think they call it a beak. Anyway, it wrapped one of its tentacles around my boat and squeezed me. I was just moments away from being squashed to death when a purple tail........ a purple tail shot up and stabbed the creature in it's one of 3 hearts. It stopped and sunk back into the depths of the ocean. Then I blacked out.
Nuala 5L
I swing open the door to my locker, jiggling the jammed lock. I heap in a large pile of books from Miss Hasson's brutal Math class, covered in apple juice and sugar from a prank that I was stupid enough to walk into. But what did I expect? Nobody likes the new kid.
Letting out my anger, I slam the door closed, giving off a bang that echoes through the hallways. Everyone turns to look at me as the rickety door falls off its hinges and crashes to the ground. Peals of laughter ring out through Veronica High School's hallways, and I can still hear them two floors up at the janitor's office.
Reid 6P
Run. It's the only thought in my head as the damp ground squelches under my aching legs as I scamper through the dark forest and into the rickety shed. Sweat stings my eyes and the stitch in my ribs is agonising. I knew it was a bad idea to sneak out of the house. The door groans as it opens, and I hide behind some bags of dirt and pray that he didn’t follow me. Unfortunately, luck wasn't on my side.
This term, the students in Year 1 have been learning about persuasive writing.
The students have learnt the simple structure of how to write persuasively and have been practicing this newfound skill on a variety of topics. 1S teacher Mrs Scarpelli said the students in 1S discussed if children should be made to do chores and their opinion, which may surprise many parents, was a resounding yes! Mrs Scarpelli said some of their reasons were quite delightful and written with purpose and passion. "We have some amazing little writers in our midst judging by these independent samples."
Lawson Bates - I firmly believe children should do chores at home. Firstly, children should clean their house and their room. It is helping your parents and your sisters and brothers. Secondly, you should help your parents because your parents will be proud of you. Finally, you should clean the bathroom, toilet and lounge room to save mum’s time. In conclusion, children should clean their house and their room .
Peyton Klein - I firmly believe children should be made to do chores at home. Firstly, children should do chores at home so that when they get older, they know how to do chores like doing homework, gardening, cleaning, packing their bag, except babies and toddlers. Secondly, children should do jobs so that when they move out of the house, they know how to do chores. Finally, children can learn skills and independence. In conclusion, these are the reasons why children should do chores .
Maddy Cavanough - Children should be made to do chores at home. Firstly, it can build their responsibility because they could become lazy. They could help their mum and dad by cleaning up dog poo, gardening, doing dishes and cooking food. Secondly, they need to know how to be responsible if they want to move out. Finally, children that never clean up anything are lazy. Therefore, children should clean up their mess and be made to help.
Alfie Stubbs - I firmly believe that it is children’s responsibility to do all of the chores. Firstly, the children won’t be lazy at all because they will just be wanting to do it. Secondly, it will make them independent for Year 2 so if I were you, I would do that! Thirdly, it will change their thinking about doing chores. Finally, when you finish, you can have fun or do more. Therefore, all children should do chores .
Ibrahim Fiazuddin - I am certain that all children should be made to do chores because it makes them independent. Firstly, it makes everything a lot easier for the parents. It also builds resilience in the child and it will impact on their responsibility. Secondly, if they don’t help out, it will make them lazy. Would you like a child who won’t help out? Surely not! It will also make them ready when they leave the house. If you make your child independent, it will change your life! However, if you don’t, there will be so much work for you. Making your child do work also makes them feel useful and helpful. Thirdly, the child will learn new skills and won’t be lazy. If the child is lazy, he or she will not learn any new skills, feel helpful and will build no resilience. Finally, if your child is lazy, you will be exhausted! You must agree that children should do chores at home.
Charlie Bradshaw - I firmly believe that children should be made to do chores at home. I also think it helps them gain responsibility. Firstly, they can learn new tricks like gardening, cleaning, feeding the cat and dog, cooking and reading. Unpacking their school bag when they get home is a good start! There is no doubt that children will benefit from doing chores at home .
Diya Allen - I firmly believe that children should do chores at home instead of mums and dads doing them. You have your own responsibility! Firstly, you should do your own things and learn to grow up as an adult. So, it is your responsibility to do your own things because your mums and dads can’t do them for you all the time. Secondly, you can’t just be lazy watching the phone or tv or iPad. You have to do all your chores before watching TV or playing games on phones. Try not to be lazy! Why can’t you do your homework, clean dishes, garden, clean the house and pick up rubbish? Thirdly, if you have a baby brother or sister, you might help them do things like dress them up or shower because they can’t do it because they are babies. You also might help them to make their bed neatly. You can also get out your baby sister or baby brother’s shirt and pants to dress them up instead of your parents dressing them up. You can also help babies because they don’t know anything! Concluding, surely you now understand that you should do your own things instead of parents doing them for you. Will you start doing your own things instead of your parents?
Will McCosker - I firmly believe that children should have the responsibility to do chores at home. Firstly, it is important to clean dishes and cleaning our rooms is so good. Secondly, it makes you feel like you’re part of the family and doing it is a little fun. Also, doing chores helps your mum and dad out a lot. Finally, doing chores is good for children. For all these reasons, adults shouldn’t do chores. Children should do them.
Abel Rapkins - I firmly believe that children should be made to do chores at home. Children should have the responsibility to clean their rooms. If children don’t do that, they will be in trouble! If mums and dads do it, when you grow up you will say, ‘You do it for me!’ Children have to learn to do it themselves. Parents shouldn’t be doing it. Children should be doing it all the time. If parents are doing it, you say, ‘No mum or dad, I am a big boy. That means I can do it myself. I want to do it myself now. I have my responsibility to do it myself!’ Some children think they don’t have to do it. You do have to do it. If you don’t do it, when you grow up, you won’t know anything. The first thing you do when you get home is you must clean up your room and water the garden and be responsible.
Briar Bridges - I firmly believe all children should be made to do chores at home. Firstly, I think it helps you gain responsibility. Secondly, you can do lots of things like cleaning, doing the dishes, feeding the animals, gardening, cooking and reading. Thirdly, you could help look after the other kids and feed them delicious food! In conclusion, there is no doubt that children will benefit from doing this.
RGS has joined Rockhampton Primary schools in supporting the Recycling Hero Schools programme.
Last week during National Recycling Week, a Recycling Hero Schools signed was displayed in RGS Primary, near Primary Reception. Attending the unveiling was Kelly Smith, Rockhampton Regional Council's Rockhampton Regional Waste & Recycling, Senior Education Officer. Earlier this term Kelly joined the Council team that visited RGS during the students' rubbish audit.
Since 2019, 20 primary and secondary schools have stepped up as true Recycling Heroes, leading their own waste and recycling initiatives. Thank you to all the dedicated students, and staff, at RGS who are helping build a zero-waste community.
Here is information on: Capricornia sports trials, the Rockhampton District Sport 2025 Trials Calendar, and Capricornia swimming nominations.
Parents of students who are intending for their children to trial for a Rockhampton District Sport in 2025, please be reminded that Permission Booklets need to be submitted two weeks prior to trial dates to allow time for Mrs Neven and Mrs Harris to sign, file and return your forms. We can not guarantee the return of your form in time if you do not allow the two week turn around, due to the multiple events happening at once, as well as the usual School responsibilities. You are able to digitally send it in to [email protected] or hand in a hard copy.
To assist in this process, the booklet is always available to download from Parent Lounge and here is a copy for you to save. Each new sport requires a new form. You can, and are encouraged to, complete and submit the form early (even from now!) to be sure the forms are ready to go when the trials occur. Please ensure you submit the 2025 version, with all pages of the booklet completed in full, otherwise we are unable to sign it. Once signed, we will file a copy and then hand back to your child. It is then the family’s responsibility to take the form with them to the trials. The trials calendar will be shared with families once it is released, but there are always many sports trialled in Term 1, so please prepare your forms early.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs Miranda Neven via email [email protected] .

Congratulations to Jardine House on winning the RGS Primary School Swimming Carnival ahead of Wheatcroft, Wheatley, and Kellow last week. This year's 100m freestyle champions were Year 6 students Oliver Lau and Emma Hansen. Oliver also set new RGS Swimming Carnival records in his 11 Years 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, and 50m butterfly events.
RGS Primary students are continuing to find representative success on the basketball court.
Congratulations to Bentley Gaka and Xavier Pittman who played on the Rockhampton Jets rep team in Division 4 of the State Basketball Championships in Toowoomba in September. The boys represented Rockhampton, and RGS, with pride and gained a great deal of experience. At the recent year end Rockhampton Basketball Inc. Awards presentation, Xavier was awarded the Coach's Award for consistently showcasing a strong work ethic and team spirit.
A big Congratulations to Brenton Gaka who played a pivotal role in the Rockhampton Rockets impressive run to the finals of the Division 1 State Basketball Championships in Toowoomba. The Rockets defeated the top ranked team from Brisbane in the semi final before falling to a Gold Coast team in a hard fought championship game. Brenton's outstanding performance was capped off with him being the leading scorer for the tournament as well as being named the Rockets Most Valuable Player.
This followed Brenton also leading his Rockhampton team to a 2024 under 12 victory, and Championship, in the Northern Queensland Junior Basketball Competition held in Townsville during August.
Updates from the Head of Secondary School (Academic).
Year 12 – QCE, Subject and ATAR Results
Well done to the Year 12 cohort on completing their external assessment tasks! The positive chatter post assessment tasks was wonderful to hear!
All subject results including QCE attainment will be published in your individual QCAA learning account at 9 am on Wednesday 11 December.
Students who are ATAR eligible need to remember their ATAR is obtained via the QTAC Portal (not via QCAA). The ATAR is due for release on Friday 13 December at 9 am.
If you have any concerns on Wednesday or Friday, please contact me via mobile on 0429 995 680 . I will also be on campus from 9 am both days.
I want to take the opportunity to wish the Year 12 cohort the very best for their post school journey. It has been a pleasure to work with you on your learning journey over the last 6 years. I hope you look back on your time at The Rockhampton Grammar School fondly and remember to visit your teachers who have worked tirelessly to ensure the best for you!! Stay safe and enjoy your post school life 😊
Year 7-12, 2025 Timetable
The Studies Directorate is in the last stage of finalising the 2025 timetable. I am currently working with the four core Heads of Department and the relevant Head of Year to construct the 2025 Form and core classes. Students will receive a copy of their timetable in late January 2025. A reminder teacher and friend requests are not taken. The Heads of Year know the students very well and such sensitivities will have already been noted.
Year 7 and 9, 2025 NAPLAN
Several years ago, the federal government moved the NAPLAN testing window from May to March. This was enacted to ensure students identified as being below the national minimum standard (NMS) can have their specific learning needs addressed by schools earlier. The testing window in 2025 commences on 12 March. The School will publish the full NAPLAN schedule once all specific details have been released by ACARA and state Education ministers.
Speech Day
I am looking forward to the upcoming Primary School and Secondary School Speech Days. I hope all recipients are able to attend to be recognised for their achievement.

Holidays
I hope all RGS families enjoy a safe and joyful holiday period. Hopefully, you are able to take time to enjoy the simple pleasures in life!
As you read this entry, assessment week has been completed, and I would like to take a moment to congratulate the Year 7 students on their conduct throughout the period, making the most of the opportunity to demonstrate their learning.
It was great to witness the cooperation evident from students, who engaged in catch-up sessions too, allowing staff the capability to provide feedback on areas of strength and opportunities for growth.
I thank the Year 7 students for the way they have welcomed me into the Acting Head of Year position. Their friendly demeanour and their willingness to share ideas during Tutorial have made this experience a pleasure. Over the last few weeks, we have examined what conflict is, the types of conflict, as well as specific strategies to avoid and minimise conflict. You may hear, or may have heard, the expression “don’t poke the bear” – a reference to the need to avoid inflaming a conflict situation – from your child as part of this series. I thank all students who have engaged in this unit and have transferred their learnings into their interactions, both within and beyond the classroom.
These learnings fit well with the theme of Community, which has been our focus this term. I will take this opportunity to thank those who have made a contribution to the worthy causes supported by the Capricorn Animal Aid and Women’s Shelter. I invite anyone who has not yet had an opportunity to donate to do so this week.
It is clear that, across this term, this group of students has grown, not only physically but in character and scholarship too. There have been many occasions when they have demonstrated independence, resilience, patience, and courage, and they are, no doubt, ready for the challenges 2025 holds for them. I am sure Ms. Rundle would echo this sentiment, and I wish them all the best for their Year 8 journey.
As we reach our last full school week of the year, I take a moment to reflect and recognise what a significant year this has been for many students.
Whether academically, socially, in health, or some other area, each one of the Year 8s has faced challenges this year. There have also been many moments of joy and celebration. But what stands out most is the growth I have seen in the students. It has been a privilege to work with the Year 8s.
Whilst assessments have now finished, our community focus in Form and Tutorial lessons continues. Our collection for the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal also continues, with baskets remaining in Form classes for the remainder of the week. On the Friday afternoon of 8 November, a number of Year 8 students came together to decorate baked goods in preparation for our snack stall at Carols in the Frame. It was a lovely afternoon and a fantastic opportunity to see how well the students can work together while genuinely enjoying each other’s company. Carols in the Frame was a wonderful night, and I am so grateful to the many Year 8s who came along to help run our stall! From this event, we raised more than $550 that will go to the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal, along with the non-perishable goods we have collected. Thank you to all families who supported this important cause.
One of the highlights of my job this year has been to see how excited this cohort is to be involved and have fun together, creating a strong bond within the group. I hope this is a dynamic that stays with this cohort as they progress into the upper grades. To each of my Year 8s, I wish you all the best as you move into Year 9. Take time to read through your reports and develop goals for Year 9, but also ensure you take time to enjoy the break and catch up with family and friends. I look forward to continuing to see you around the school and hearing of your many achievements. I wish you all a very safe and Merry Christmas!
As we reach the close of another successful school year, I want to take a moment to celebrate the achievements and growth of our Year 9 students.
This year has been a journey of learning, exploration, and personal development, preparing them to step confidently into Year 10. Each student has shown remarkable progress, not just academically but also in building qualities that will serve them for life.
Our school emphasises values such as growth, integrity, honour, respect, care, endeavour, responsibility, courage, and resilience. These values, woven into their studies and school activities, form the foundation of strong character and responsible citizenship. I am proud of how our students have embraced these principles and carried them forward each day.
With a growth mindset, students have learned to approach challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities to grow. Many have pushed beyond their comfort zones, discovering their strengths and addressing areas for improvement. I encourage you to continue nurturing this mindset at home, as it’s invaluable for lifelong learning and adaptability.
Please take the time to reflect on the Report results and comments and use these as motivation for Year 10. Set goals and develop a plan to reach these goals in 2025.
Please enjoy your summer vacation and have a great Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Remember to spend some quality time with your families. For our boarders, this is a great chance to catch up with family and share in all your experiences this year. I look forward to 2025 and catching up with you all as Year 10s in the Senior School as your Head of Year.
As we draw to the close of another school year, I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to all our Year 10 families for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout 2024.
It has truly been a privilege to work alongside this exceptional group of students, and I have thoroughly enjoyed witnessing their journey over the course of the year. Though I will certainly miss seeing them regularly as they advance into their senior years, I am filled with pride and anticipation for the next chapter of their school lives.
Reflecting on the past year, it is impossible not to marvel at the personal growth and development I have seen within this cohort. The students have consistently demonstrated leadership, resilience, and a deeper sense of maturity that will serve them well as they transition into Years 11 and 12. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to all the parents and guardians for your ongoing communication and the thoughtful feedback you have provided throughout the year. Your involvement has been instrumental in enhancing our Year 10 programmes and ensuring the best possible outcomes for your children.
This year, a significant highlight has been the completion of the Certificate I in Active Volunteering by the vast majority of Year 10 students. This achievement is not only a testament to their hard work but also showcases the spirit of service and initiative that runs within this group. To each of those students, I am immensely proud of your commitment and dedication in completing your volunteer hours, often going above and beyond expectations. A special thank you must also be extended to the Year 10 Form Teachers and to Ms. Cindy Murray for their tireless efforts, guidance, and unwavering support. Your positivity and genuine care have played a crucial role in the success of this initiative.
As we approach the final week of the term, a few housekeeping reminders are in order. Please ensure that you notify the Secondary School Office, the Absentees team, Boarding (if a boarder), and me if your child will be finishing early. Should there be a need for extended leave (longer than three days), the relevant forms are available from the Secondary School Office. It would be greatly appreciated if completed forms could be returned to me as soon as possible. I am also more than happy to email a copy of this form should that be easier.
As the festive season fast approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Year 10 families a relaxing and enjoyable break. I hope that the holiday period will be filled with joy, rest, and quality time with loved ones. I am already looking forward to welcoming the students back in 2025, refreshed and ready for the exciting challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in their senior years. I eagerly await hearing about their holiday adventures and new experiences.
Once again, thank you to the students, parents, and staff for making this year so successful and memorable. Your collective efforts have created an environment where our Year 10 students have not only thrived but have also built a solid foundation for the years to come.
It is with sadness that I write my last newsletter of 2024.
With the school year ending, I have mixed emotions: on one hand, I am sad to see the Year 11s move on to Year 12; but I am excited and proud to see where 2025 takes them. If this year is anything to go by, I know the Year 11s will continue to make us all proud and continue to grow not only in character but in scholarship as well.
Emails regarding Summer School have been sent out. If you are wanting to organise a catch-up or an academic boost for your child, please email Ms. Carter (Head of Secondary School: Academics). Further to this, if your child has made any late changes to their subjects, Summer School will be a great way to ensure they are on top of the course load for 2024. Any students receiving an award for Speech Day will be notified of their award shortly. If you cannot make it to the event, please join the live stream. Students will finish school at 11:50 am on Thursday, 28 November – please ask your student(s) to ensure their lockers are cleaned out and rubbish is placed in the bin. Anything left over at the end of term will be thrown out.
This week we have our Year 11 break-up at the RGS Rowing Club. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to utilise the school's facilities to reflect on what an amazing year this has been. A massive thank you in advance to all the staff and students coming together to make the night a success. Normally, students do not want to leave at the end of the night, and I do not see this year being any different.
As a final note, I would like to remind students to keep up to date with their subjects and assessments by logging into their MyQCE profile online and downloading subject exemplars and syllabus documents. These documents will assist students in achieving the best possible academic outcomes for 2025.
I wish each and every one of our RGS families a safe and enjoyable break and look forward to seeing you in 2025, refreshed and ready to take on what the year has in store.
We now have a graduated class of 2024!
The last of the ‘lasts’ occurred over the previous week: the last of the external exams culminated with the Agricultural Science exam on Monday; the students’ last day at school, including the memorable jump in the pool tradition; the last time that all students will don their RGS uniform; the last time that they will all be together as a cohort; the last of the RGS events as students – Boarder Mocktails and Valedictory – and finally, but by no means least, the last time that they will call themselves Rockhampton Grammar students. These young people have made the shift to being Grammar Alumni and all should be very proud of their efforts.
As the school year draws to a close, it is with a mixture of pride, nostalgia, and anticipation for the future that I reflect on the incredible journey this Year 12 cohort has experienced this year.
This year has been marked by remarkable leadership, unwavering participation, and unforgettable moments. Our students have stepped into leadership positions with confidence, guiding their peers and the school with integrity and enthusiasm. From the spirited school swimming, athletics, and cross-country carnivals to the memorable day spent at Ritamada, the engagement and sportsmanship displayed have been commendable.
Each student’s journey has been unique, yet the collective effort and commitment to academic excellence and character growth have been a testament to their wonderful nature and future aspirations. The knowledge and skills they have acquired this year will undoubtedly serve as a strong foundation for their future endeavours.
As they look toward the future beyond the RGS school gates, staff are excited for the diverse paths our students will take. Whether pursuing university, entering the workforce, engaging in trades, taking a gap year, experiencing Schoolies or alike, or travelling the world, the possibilities are endless. The courage to embrace new opportunities and the wisdom gained from their schooling will guide them as they embark on these new adventures.
To our Year 12 students, as you step into the next chapter of your lives, remember the values, friendships, and experiences that have shaped you. Your journey is just beginning, and the future is bright with promise and potential.
To the families, thank you for your unwavering support and encouragement throughout the years. Your partnership has been invaluable in nurturing and guiding our students to this pivotal point in their lives.
I look forward to seeing what journey each Year 12 graduate has undertaken and wish them all the best as they embark on their adult lives. May their dreams be big, their challenges be conquerable, and their joys be abundant.

Students designed their protective contraptions from everyday materials. As eggs flew (and occasionally splatted), students learned firsthand how physics plays out in real life.
Year 11 Agriculture Science students have been learning about regenerative agriculture this term.
Emma and Gus from the Lachlan Hughes Foundation visited RGS Year 11 Agricultural Science students recently to discuss the importance of regenerative agriculture and its impact on improving soil quality. The Lachlan Hughes Foundation aims to support people who are motivated ‘to do’ and are ‘implementers of change’ and ‘champions for regenerative agriculture’. Discover more about the Foundation at https://lachlanhughesfoundation.org.au/
This term, RGS Year 11 Biology students embarked on an exciting adventure to Great Keppel Island, where they dived into hands-on ecology studies.
Students had the incredible chance to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, encountering a vibrant array of marine life, from stingrays and turtles to clams, sea cucumbers, and countless colourful fish species. Working in teams, they conducted fieldwork along Monkey Beach, gathering data on the abundance and percentage cover of plant species along a belt transect. The students also created a gradient profile and measured key abiotic factors, making real-world connections to their classroom learning!

5 out-of-this-world space careers
Ever dreamed of working in the space industry but thought you’d need to be an astronaut? The modern space sector is booming with opportunities that are way more diverse than you might imagine. And with
a value of USD $630 billion and growing
, it’s a growth industry that’s looking for people with a ‘make-it-happen’ attitude. From launching rockets to designing space hotels, here are five incredible careers that could blast your future into orbit.
Propulsion engineer
Want to literally make rockets go boom? Propulsion engineers are the masterminds behind rocket engines, and they’re in huge demand right now. At companies like
SpaceX
and
RocketLab
, these engineers design and test the engines that power spacecraft into orbit.
What makes this cool? You could work on anything from the massive Raptor engines that will take humans to Mars , to smaller engines for satellite launches. Plus, you get to witness actual rocket engine tests – imagine telling your friends that making controlled explosions is part of your job description!
What you’ll need: A degree in aerospace, mechanical, or chemical engineering, and a love for both the big picture and tiny details. Maths and physics are your best friends here.
Space habitat designer
Think interior design is just for houses? Think bigger – like designing entire living spaces for astronauts. With companies like
Axiom Space
building the first commercial space station and plans for lunar bases in the works, space habitat designers are creating the homes of the future. And that’s not even considering Mars.
You’ll tackle unique challenges like: How do you make a comfortable bedroom in zero gravity? What’s the best way to design a space kitchen? How do you create spaces that keep astronauts both physically and mentally healthy during long missions?
What you’ll need: Architecture or industrial design background, with a solid understanding of human factors engineering. Creativity is key – you’re literally designing something that’s never existed before.
Satellite operations manager
Ever wondered who’s in charge of controlling the thousands of satellites orbiting Earth? Satellite operations managers are like space traffic controllers, keeping track of everything from communication satellites to Earth observation systems.
At companies like Planet Labs or Starlink , you might manage a constellation of satellites, planning their orbits, monitoring their health, and making sure they’re doing their jobs properly. When something goes wrong, you’re the person who figures out how to fix a machine that’s traveling at over 25,000 km per hour.
What you’ll need: A background in aerospace engineering, computer science, or physics, plus excellent problem-solving skills. Being cool under pressure is essential, as satellites wait for no one.
Space manufacturing engineer
Here’s something mind-blowing: we’re starting to make things in space. Space manufacturing engineers are pioneering ways to produce materials that are impossible to create on Earth due to gravity. Companies like
Redwire Space
are already 3D printing tools on the International Space Station, and that’s just the beginning.
Imagine designing processes to make perfect crystals for medical research, or super-strong fiber optic cables, all in zero gravity. You could be part of creating an entire new industrial revolution – in space.
What you’ll need: A degree in materials science, manufacturing engineering, or a related field. Innovation is crucial because you’re literally writing the handbook for how to make things in space.
Commercial space operations coordinator
Welcome to the business side of space. As private space travel becomes reality, companies like
Virgin Galactic
and
Blue Origin
need people to coordinate commercial space flights. You’ll work with everyone from engineers to customers, making sure space tourism and commercial missions run smoothly.
Your day might involve planning launch schedules, coordinating with clients who want to send experiments to space, or helping organize training for space tourists. It’s like being an event planner, but your venue is space itself.
What you’ll need: A business or management degree is great, but what’s most important is excellent organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities. Knowledge of the space industry is crucial, and being able to speak “both languages” – technical and business – is a huge plus.
The future is limitless
The space industry isn’t just growing – it’s exploding with career opportunities. The best part? These jobs are available right now, not in some distant future. Companies are actively hiring for these positions as the commercial space race heats up.
