Thank you to everyone who donated items or volunteered their time — your generosity made this possible. Special thanks to the Garden Club students who gave up their morning tea and lunch breaks to help: Evie Thomas, Ariana Benson, Paige & Hunter Kirk . And a big thanks to the following Year 6 Leaders who so generously gave up their breaks on what was a very busy day for them otherwise: Henry Houghton, Richie Simpson and Lexie Kirk .

• Primary Colour Fun Run: We ended Term 3 on a high with our first ever Colour Fun Run for our Primary students — and what a day it was! Students, teachers, and parents came together for a whole lot of colourful fun. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Primary School Leadership Team for their commitment and support throughout the event, with a special mention to Mrs Alicia Odewahn for her outstanding effort and dedication in helping bring it all together. Thank you also to Melissa Thomas and Naz Benson for their help on the day.

These funds will be invested back into our school community, including funding for Grade 6 camp shirts and upgrades to playground equipment. More details will be shared once these projects are finalised.

New Law: Minimum Age of 16 for Social Media Accounts

New Law: Minimum Age of 16 for Social Media Accounts

The Australian Government has introduced new legislation setting a minimum age of 16 for social media use. The new rules, coming into effect in December 2025, are designed to enhance online safety and reduce exposure to harmful or age-inappropriate content. Here's what you need to know:

What’s changing?

From 10 December 2025 , certain social media platforms will be legally required to take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under the age of 16 from creating or maintaining accounts.

Importantly, the responsibility lies with the social media platforms, not with children, families or schools, to enforce the age requirement.

There are no penalties for under-16s or their parents if they access a platform; the law targets noncompliance by the platforms themselves.

Which platforms will be included?

“Age-restricted social media platforms” generally include services whose significant purpose is enabling interaction between users, posting content, or linking users.

Platforms currently anticipated to be subject to the rules include Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube

What “reasonable steps” means

The legislation does not mandate a single method of enforcement. Instead, the eSafety Commissioner has issued “Regulatory Guidance” to platforms on how they might comply.

Platforms may use a combination of techniques such as age estimation, age inference, verification, layered checks, and so on — provided they are privacy-respecting, proportionate, transparent and inclusive.

The guidance also expects platforms to:
• identify and deactivate existing accounts held by under-16s
• block re-registration
• provide options for users affected (e.g. retrieving data)

Why did the government do this?

Research and advocacy point to risks associated with younger teens’ exposure to harmful content, addictive platform designs, privacy and mental health impacts.

The age of 16 was chosen as a threshold because many younger adolescents may be in a more vulnerable developmental phase.

What it means for your child

If your child is under 16, they may no longer be able to keep or create accounts on these platforms after December 2025.

Over the next months, social media companies will roll out systems and communication about how this will work in practice.

GenAI at RGS

Maintaining Academic Integrity in the Secondary School

Maintaining Academic Integrity in the Secondary School

At The Rockhampton Grammar School, we encourage students to use Generative AI (GenAI) tools responsibly to support their learning.

To uphold academic integrity, please ensure your child follows these guidelines:

* Your child's work must reflect their own understanding and effort.

* Ensure your child always discloses if they have used GenAI in their work.

* Each assessment task will specify how GenAI can or cannot be used. If your child is unsure, encourage them to ask their teacher.

* If your child uses GenAI, they should include a citation and attach transcripts of AI-generated content in the appendix of their task.

* If your child is unsure about AI use in an assignment, they should speak with their teacher before submitting their work.

* Teachers may monitor progress, review drafts, and discuss the process to verify the work is your child's own.

Using AI dishonestly, such as submitting AI-generated work as their own, is considered academic misconduct. If a teacher suspects AI misuse, your child's work will be reviewed using multiple methods, which may include discussions, review of drafts, IT investigation, and AI detection tools. Your child may be asked to explain their process in an interview or resubmit part of their work.

If academic misconduct is confirmed, consequences will follow the School’s Academic & Pastoral Care Policies & Procedures.

Maintaining academic integrity helps build trust, responsibility, and confidence in your child's learning. If you or your child have any concerns about AI use, always ask the teacher for guidance.

You can view the full Generative AI Parent Guidelines here.

Maintaining Academic Integrity in the Primary School

Maintaining Academic Integrity in the Primary School

In the Primary School, students will be required to be honest about using GenAI in their schoolwork. Students will always be provided with clear direction and/or supervision when using AI to complete their schoolwork.

They will be taught how to ensure academic integrity is maintained. Academic integrity means students doing their own best work and giving credit to others when their ideas are used. Academic misconduct occurs when students have done the wrong thing with their learnings.

Examples of academic misconduct using AI may include, but are not limited to:

* Copying AI-generated text.

* Using AI to complete assignments without teacher permission.

* Submitting AI-generated work as their own.

* Using AI to cheat on assignments or homework. AI should not be used to find answers for tests or tasks meant to assess their learning.

If academic misconduct is confirmed, consequences will be issued by the Head of Primary and follow the School Behaviour Policy.

Head of Primary - Mrs Kate Harris

As we begin Term 4, 2025, I extend a warm welcome to all families.

The final term of the year is always one of great energy and achievement — filled with rich learning experiences, assessments, co-curricular activities, and celebrations that mark the end of another wonderful year at The Rockhampton Grammar School.

This term, we are delighted to welcome several new students and their families to our Primary School. We hope they quickly feel part of our supportive community.

Term 4 is also the time when we begin detailed planning for the year ahead. Over the coming weeks, teachers and leaders will be beginning class structures, teacher allocations, and student placements for 2026. Our continued enrolment growth has led to some exciting developments for next year. In 2026, we will be introducing a Year 4/5 composite class to meet increased demand for places in these year levels. This addition allows us to welcome more families into our school while continuing to provide the benefits of an RGS education for all students.

We are pleased to share that Mr Jason Rooks will be the teacher of this class. Jason is a highly respected and experienced lead teacher of our Primary team who brings deep expertise, professionalism, and care to his teaching. He is looking forward to the opportunities and learning experiences this new structure will provide.

We understand that composite classes can sometimes come with mixed emotions. Please be assured that at RGS, we are well equipped to deliver these successfully. In fact, composite groupings have already proven highly effective within our Primary School, providing a rich learning environment where students are both supported and extended according to their individual needs.

The composition of all classes for 2026 will be carefully considered throughout this term to ensure the best possible outcomes for every student. Our teachers invest significant time in balancing academic strengths, social relationships, and learning needs.

I would like to thank parents for their trust and understanding as we undertake this complex process. While we are unable to take specific teacher requests, I encourage parents who have significant or complex concerns regarding their child’s placement to contact me in writing within the next three weeks. Once classes are finalised, we will be unable to make changes.

Transitions and new beginnings can bring a mix of excitement and nerves for both children and families. Your calm encouragement and positive support play an important role in helping your child approach these changes with confidence.

Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment as we work together to finish the year strongly and prepare for another exciting year of growth and learning in 2026.

Updates from the Deputy Head of Primary (Operations & Students)

As we begin our final term of the school year, there is a special kind of energy that fills our classrooms and playgrounds. Children are excited about what is ahead – camps, celebrations, transitions and the promise of holidays. Yet alongside this excitement, many students can also experience a mix of emotions: tiredness, change, anticipation, and sometimes worry about what comes next.

This blend of feelings can show up in different ways. Some children become more energetic and restless; others may feel more sensitive or less tolerant of challenges that they managed more easily earlier in the year. As adults, we can help them “finish well” by keeping routines steady, setting clear expectations, and offering gentle reassurance when things feel big.

A few helpful ways to support your child this term might include:

Keep the rhythm: Maintain regular routines for sleep, meals, and homework — predictability helps children feel safe.

Name and normalise feelings: Let your child know it is okay to feel a mix of emotions — excitement, nervousness, even sadness as things change.

Focus on gratitude and reflection: Encourage conversations about what they have enjoyed, achieved, and learned this year.

Model calm: Children take their cues from us; our calm and consistency help them regulate their own emotions.

Celebrate effort, not just outcomes: Acknowledge growth, resilience, and kindness as much as grades or achievements.

As we journey through this final term together, our focus remains on nurturing each child’s wellbeing — helping them feel safe, valued, and ready for the transitions ahead. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students to finish the year with pride, gratitude, and a sense of accomplishment.

Life ed visits for Years 5 & 6
As part of our commitment to supporting student wellbeing and aligning with the Health and Physical Education curriculum, we are pleased to welcome Life Ed Queensland to our school to deliver puberty education sessions for our Year 5 and Year 6 students.

These sessions will take place during Term 4, Week 4 , with classroom teachers present to support the students throughout each session. Additional information is attached to this email.

Year 5: Welcome to Puberty

Year 6: Thriving in Puberty

The sessions are designed to provide students with accurate, age-appropriate information about the physical, emotional and social changes that occur during puberty. They aim to:

Build knowledge and confidence around growing and changing bodies

Promote positive self-esteem and respect for self and others

Provide practical strategies for managing change

Encourage open, respectful conversations with trusted adults

A Parent Information Session will be held on: Thursday 23rd October, 3:15–4:00 pm in the RGS Auditorium

For those unable to attend, a recording will be available upon request.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at or visit Life Ed Qld Hub for more information. There is an opt-out form attached to this email also. All students will participate in this session, unless this form is completed and returned.

We value your partnership in supporting our students as they navigate this important stage of their personal development.

Day for Daniel
Friday 31st October, we will join schools across Australia in recognising Day for Daniel , a national day of action dedicated to raising awareness about child safety, protection, and harm prevention. The day encourages age-appropriate conversations with children about personal safety, recognising unsafe situations, and knowing how to seek help from trusted adults.

Child safety is always a priority at RGS, and this day provides another valuable opportunity to build student understanding and confidence in keeping themselves and others safe. Teachers will be having additional conversations in class and working through activities designed to raise awareness and deepen understanding of this important issue and national day of conversation.

Students are invited to wear a red t-shirt , with their school sports shorts to show their support and stand together for child safety. By participating, we continue to build a culture where every child feels safe, supported, and empowered to speak up.

Remembrance Day
On Monday 11 November , our school community will pause to acknowledge Remembrance Day — a time to reflect on and honour the service and sacrifice of those who have served in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.

As a school, we will gather for a short service of remembrance to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month . Together, we will observe a minute’s silence to show respect and gratitude to all who have served, and to those who continue to serve, for the peace and freedoms we enjoy today.

We are proud to stand together as a school community in remembrance and respect.

Updates from Head of Primary (Academics)

As we begin Term 4, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on just how far our students have come. Throughout the year, they have shown curiosity, determination, and growing confidence as learners. Across every year level, we are seeing students take greater ownership of their learning - asking deeper questions, engaging in rich discussions, and applying knowledge with increasing independence.

This final term invites both reflection and anticipation. Students are consolidating their understanding, celebrating milestones, and setting their sights on new challenges ahead. While the term is full and the pace quickens, our focus remains on ensuring that every child continues to feel supported and proud of their progress.

We are deeply appreciative of the role our parents play in this journey. Your encouragement, communication, and partnership with teachers create the strong foundations that help students thrive academically and personally. Together, we are building learners who not only achieve well, but who enjoy the process of learning itself.

As we look ahead, our Speech Day will be a highlight. It is a time to recognise the effort, growth, and achievement of our students across the year. Further details about Speech Day will be shared in upcoming newsletters and emails.

Thank you for your continued support as we guide our students through these final weeks of learning. It is a privilege to share in their growth and to celebrate the joy and purpose that come from learning together.

Annually, the Queensland Department of Education – Strategy and Performance contacts Year 12 graduates and publishes a Next Step survey. This document provides comprehensive information regarding the employment, study and life choices of Year 12 graduates approximately six months after completing Year 12 at any Queensland government, catholic or independent school. The Rockhampton Grammar School’s report for Year 12, 2024 had a 67.6% completion rate with 121 of the 179 graduates responding. Data provided by the Department of Education indicates 97.5% were engaged in education, training or employment in the year after completing school. Of the 121 respondents, 74.4% continued in education and training while a further 23.1% transitioned directly into paid employment only.

Year 12
Confirmation – IA3
Last term, the School uploaded all student results for IA3 to QCAA along with requested samples. As part of the confirmation process, these papers are reviewed by QCAA trained confirmers and the outcome for all subjects has been received. This data should be available in each student’s learning account.

External Assessment Preparation
One of the final tasks for the Year 12 journey is the completion of external examinations. To ensure Year 12 RGS graduates know exactly what is required for the EA block commencing on Monday 27 October, I will be taking the Prep for Senior class on Friday 17 October through key information. It is important Year 12 students ask any questions they have at this lesson (or prior to commencement of the EA block).

Students must attend external examinations for all relevant subjects and are required to wear full day or formal uniform .

Year 12 students have been sent the QCAA issued, Directions for Students, and the EA Equipment List. Students are reminded to review these documents closely. Both are available on the myQCE website.

The School will email an RGS External Assessment Tutorial Timetable to students and parents. I strongly encourage students to attend the tutorials.

What to do if ...
you are sick on the day of an external examination – you must contact Ms Reniece Carter ( [email protected] or 0429995680, 49 360 609 ) or Mr Julien Wright ( [email protected] or 49360606) asap. QCAA has a strict process in place for students to remain eligible for subject credit.

you are late on the day of an external examination – you must call or text Ms Reniece Carter asap on 0429 995680 or Mr Julien Wright on 0408 324 448 .

you are unsure of an examination date/start time or equipment required – refer to the examination timetable with venues which was sent last term or the RGS Year 12 Teams page. You can also refer to the myQCE website (specifically the Year 12, 2025 Student Guide).

It feels as though it was only yesterday that we were welcoming our new Year 7 students into the Auditorium, wearing their slightly oversized uniforms and looking apprehensive about the journey they were about to begin.

Now, in just over a month and a half, they will have completed their Year 7 journey.

Term Four will pass quickly. In Year 7 Enrichment this week, I reminded students that by Week 3 they will be navigating draft and assignment due dates, and exams will be just around the corner in Week 5. We discussed that, although they often have a couple of weeks to warm up, that is not a luxury we have in Term Four. To stay on top of their learning, they will need to return immediately to the positive study habits they have built throughout the year.

Our focus across Form and Tutorial this term is community. Over the next few weeks, more information will be shared about our Salvation Army Christmas Appeal collection, and I have encouraged students to consider how else they can be involved in supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our local community.

Last week, 7G enjoyed their Form Camp at Ritamada, particularly appreciating the slightly warmer weather as they sailed, swam, and canoed. Although exhausted, they returned on Thursday afternoon with big smiles. Today, 7A departed for their Form Camp, making them the final Year 7 group to undertake the Ritamada experience. We wish them a wonderful time and kind weather, and we look forward to hearing from them upon their return.

Thank you to our Form teachers, Mr Fisher and Ms Cox, who have ably staffed Ritamada, as well as to our Transport, Maintenance, Kitchen, and Administration staff who make these wonderful camps possible.

If you have any questions or concerns throughout this term, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Welcome Back to Term 4!

I hope everyone had a fantastic break and is feeling refreshed and ready for the busy term ahead. Term 4is always both short and full of activity, so it is important to stay organised and make the most of every week. If you know you will be away for any planned absences, please let the school know in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements.

In Form this term, our focus is on community service. As part of this, we will be undertaking our major charity fundraiser for the year. This year, Year 8 will be supporting our local Women’s Shelter through a collection of essential items. More information about how you can contribute will be shared in the coming weeks.

Please continue to take pride in your appearance and help us maintain high standards with uniform. While we are in the two-year rollout period for the new uniform, please remember that mixing old and new uniform items is not permitted. Thank you for your continued support with this transition.

Term 4 is always a busy one, with plenty happening for students and their families. If there is anything I can do to help, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Wishing everyone a positive and successful Term 4!

It is hard to believe how quickly the year has flown by!

It has been wonderful reconnecting with our Year 10 students and hearing about their holiday adventures — especially those who attended the OEP camps before the break. Students have been asked to complete a short survey to provide feedback on their camp experiences, and it is great to hear that most found the camps fun, challenging, and refreshing.

Term Four is always a busy one, with plenty of assessments, events, and final tasks to complete. I encourage all Year 10 students to regularly check their school emails, as important updates and information will be shared throughout the term from various departments.

Our priority this term is to finalise the remaining SET Plan Interviews over the next two weeks. If any students have not yet booked an interview, please ensure this is done as soon as possible.

A huge thank you to Mrs Murray, who worked diligently over the break to finalise marking for the Certificate I in Active Volunteering. Students now have the opportunity to submit any final pieces of work and volunteer logs to complete their qualification. Congratulations to those who have already achieved this milestone!

During last week’s Tutorial lessons, I noticed that some students still have outstanding volunteer hours. These hours are essential for completing the certificate. The school has provided a range of opportunities to meet this requirement, so it is now up to students to take responsibility for finishing their hours.

If students or parents have any questions about subject selections or the Certificate I in Active Volunteering, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Here is to a positive and productive Term 4 as our Year 10 students take the final steps in preparing for their senior years.

The recent Year 11 Leadership Camp was a tremendous success, providing students with opportunities to develop and showcase their leadership strengths.

. It was inspiring to witness so many individuals rise to challenges, collaborate effectively, and display initiative throughout the program. Students also recently attended the 'Day of Hope' seminar presented by Glen Gerreyn. This was an eye-opening and engaging experience that encouraged reflection on resilience, purpose, and maintaining a positive outlook as students prepare for their final year of schooling.

We are now looking forward to hearing from our aspiring leaders in the 2026 Captains’ Speeches, as students share their vision for the future of the senior cohort and the wider school community.

Our Year 11 students continue to show a strong sense of community spirit with the Share the Dignity #ItsInTheBag campaign in full swing. Students have also begun their Formal and Valedictory fundraising efforts, starting with two exciting upcoming events:

Halloween BBQ & Bake Sale
Date: Wednesday, 29 October
(during extended morning tea)
We ask that Year 11 students bring baked goods to contribute to the stall.

Christmas Raffle
Draw Date: Tuesday, 25 November

Please donate Christmas-themed items for our raffle hampers — all donations can be dropped off at the SSO. Each Year 11 student is also asked to sell one raffle booklet (10 tickets at $2 each). Raffle books are available for collection from the SSO.

As Term 4progresses, Year 11 students have now commenced Year 12 coursework across their chosen subjects. It is important that all subject changes are finalised as soon as possible so students can settle confidently into their senior pathways. Please contact the SSO or me promptly if any adjustments are still required.

Welcome back to the final term of schooling for Year 12s.

Whilst this is both an incredibly exciting and poignant time, it also marks the time when students prepare to explore the world beyond school—an experience that can feel overwhelming for some. While I know they will be celebrating many ‘lasts’ of their schooling journey, I have impressed that they place importance on staying healthy, both physically and mentally, over this term.

In last week’s Year Level Meeting, Sandee from the Red Cross provided information regarding giving blood, including the important uses and myths surrounding who can or cannot give blood depending on their circumstances. Following is a link to the RGS dashboard, through which students can sign up if they wish to donate: Lifeblood Teams home page . Sandee also mentioned that students can donate in groups. 3 – 4 people at a time works well and donors would be at the Rockhampton Donor Centre | Australian Red Cross Lifeblood for about 1 – 1.5 hours. Further information can be found at Lifeblood | Be a life-saver today | Donate blood and more .

Please take note of the following important dates for this Term. Events in bold are those that parents are invited to attend:

* Leadership Colours Ceremony rehearsal – Thursday 23 October 9:50 am

* Headmaster’s Lunch – Wednesday 22 October 12:30 pm

* Mocktails – Thursday 23 October 5:30 pm

* Final day of classes – Friday 24 October

* Leadership Colours and Induction of School Leaders Ceremony – Friday 24 October 9:30 am

* Honour Guard – Friday 24 October 10:10 am

* Year 12 Final Day – Friday 21 November 8:30 am in Auditorium (ALL students MUST attend)

* Valedictory – Friday 21 November 5:00 pm

* Speech Day – Wednesday 26 November

Further information regarding external exams will be emailed to students in the coming week and provided on the Year Level Meeting Teams class OneNote. Students found that the Mocks were very beneficial in providing them an idea of the setting and structure of the Externals and have provided valuable feedback towards further preparation for these exams.

I wish students all the best as they prepare for upcoming exams, job interviews, apprenticeships, and their post-school plans. Although this term is busy, it offers valuable experiences—make the most of your final months at The Rockhampton Grammar School.

Catch up on the RGS Library news in Term 4!

It’s always nice to hear students saying, “This is awesome!” and “Wow!” within the first few minutes of a learning experience in the library.

The Year 2 students forayed into augmented reality using Merge Cubes to explore the solar system. Students used the merge cubes to make the planets come to life. Year 2s were able to see the solar system in motion through their iPads using this augmented reality tool. Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s colourful swirling patterns were easily explored, and we were able to see the earth and moon revolving around the sun.

Students will continue to use this technology to learn more about the moon and its important features.

Boarding News

From the Head of Boarding - Mr Mike Silcock

From the Head of Boarding - Mr Mike Silcock

Here is the latest news from RGS Director of Boarding Mr Mike Silcock.

Closed Weekend – a weekend of nostalgia and community spirit
What a wonderful way to begin the term! Our Closed Weekend was nothing short of a triumph — a nostalgic nod to simpler times, filled with laughter, healthy competition, and more than a few questionable 90s dance moves.

The theme of ‘Step Back in Time, and Make this Weekend a Classic’ proved to be a hit from start to finish. Across the weekend, our boarders took part in everything from old-school, backyard-style competitions to board games that some students insisted “should be turned into eSports.” In between, we made full use of the incredible offerings right on our doorstep — leisurely strolls through the Botanical Gardens, visit to the local zoo, and of course, plenty of time cooling off in our very own pool. It was a weekend that perfectly balanced relaxation with activity, reminding everyone just how much joy can be found in our own backyard.

Saturday night’s Retro Disco was perhaps the standout moment of the weekend. As soon as the first 90s classic hit the speakers, the energy was electric — even if the dance moves were… somewhat unfamiliar to our younger generation. Watching our boarders attempt the Macarena and Saturday Night (often simultaneously) was an experience few of us will forget. Judging by the laughter and enthusiasm, it’s safe to say the disco achieved its mission of bringing the entire boarding community together in good spirits.

A special mention must go to our Year 12s. Although they had the option to spend the weekend elsewhere, many chose to stay and celebrate what would be their final closed weekend as boarders. Their presence added a wonderful sense of leadership, nostalgia, and camaraderie to the weekend. To those Year 12s — thank you. Your choice to join in one last time reflects exactly what makes our boarding community so special.

All in all, the weekend achieved everything it set out to — rekindling friendships, strengthening bonds, and reminding us all that while the term ahead may be busy, we’re always stronger when we’re together.

Reef versus Ranges – a Rivalry is born!
The countdown is on! In just days, the much-anticipated “Reef versus Ranges” event is upon us — and if the buzz around the boarding houses is anything to go by, this event promises to be bigger, louder, and more fiercely contested than anything before.

Set for Sunday, 19 October, at Rugby Park, this is The Rockhampton Grammar School Boarding’s very own version of State of Origin — where pride, bragging rights, and a year’s worth of glory are all up for grabs. Our senior boarders will once again represent their home regions — Reef or Ranges — in two fierce games of competition, community spirit, and good old-fashioned fun.

The excitement is already palpable. This week will see training sessions, team strategy meetings, and even a jersey presentation ceremony to mark the official start of rivalry week. We also have some special “media commitments” lined up — interviews, photos, and a few surprises to keep everyone guessing. The talk in the dining hall has shifted entirely to game plans, line-ups, and who’s been spotted sneaking in some extra practice sessions.

This event isn’t just about competition — it’s about celebrating everything that makes our boarding community so unique. It’s the camaraderie, the laughter, and the friendly rivalry that remind us all what it means to belong to something bigger than ourselves.

To our boarding families — if ever there were a weekend to make the trip to Rockhampton, this is it. We’d love to see you at Rugby Park this Sunday, cheering on our boarders as they give it their all across two blockbuster games. There’ll be action, atmosphere, and plenty of entertainment for everyone. It’s shaping up to be one of the highlights of our boarding calendar, and your presence will make it all the more special.

So dust off your supporter gear, pick your side — Reef or Ranges — and get ready for a Sunday filled with spirit, sport, and boarding school pride.

Go Reef! Go Ranges! Go Boarding!

Until next time — here’s to another fortnight of energy, laughter, and community at RGS Boarding.
